I should mention -- there will be spoilers and I'm not going to make any attempt to hide them behind cuts or whatever. There's no point. People come to Outlander from all sorts of places -- they've read all the books and seen every episode/they've only seen the show/they've only read the books/various combos of all of these, etc. I have no idea what would constitute a potential spoiler, so you've been warned.
I am not that far in yet, just over page 100. I had forgotten -- no, I lie, I hadn't really forgotten, more like I tried to forget -- all about the Gathering. The never-fucking-ending Gathering. OMG. I mean, it's worse when you recall that the Gathering actually starts at the end of Drums of Autumn, and carries on into Fiery Cross. I think it was on my 2nd, or maybe 3rd reread of FC that I realized that pages and pages and pages set at the Gathering were the events of ONE day.
I saw a tweet last year lamenting that season 4 of Outlander hadn't ended with them at the Gathering. My response was "thank fuck for that!" How stupid would that be if they had ended the season at the Gathering, and then started season 5 still at the Gathering! It's bad enough that it sucks up so much of the book. I mean, really, there are loads and loads and loads of things in that section that honestly, we didn't need. At all. A few things are plot-related, but the bulk of it is filler and could have been said in far fewer pages.
More in line with my own thoughts on the matter, I saw another tweet more recently where someone begged the powers that be that no more than one episode be taken up by the Gathering. And given that we're getting only 12 episodes this season, I'm hoping it's not even one full episode...
