I finished TFC earlier this week.

I don't love this one, but I don't hate it either. It's very much a transition novel. I get why a number of people struggle with it -- there really isn't that much that actually happens, which is why I think this one will adapt quite well, even with the plot changes the show has introduced.

I know in an earlier post, the one about the Gathering, I wrote that they could leave out the bit about the priest being arrested. I guess they can't now as I'd forgotten that all of that tied into the larger plot around the gold, with the Sheriff and Lilywhite reappearing near the end part of the novel, when Jamie and Roger are trying to find Bonnet.

Lord John doesn't figure at all in TFC, except via letters to Jamie, but it seems he will appear in the show. At the very least, I believe he's at Bree and Roger's wedding.

I was struck again while reading by some of the differences between the book character and the casting choices. The most obvious one of course is Lizzie. In the book, she's tiny, waif-like, and frequently ill with malaria. TV Lizzie is taller than TV Bree, and while they briefly referenced that she was ill and maybe it was malaria in season 4, it's not really been a thing at all. Marsali in the book comes across differently than Marsali on TV. A bit frailer or something. I do love Lauren Lyle's portrayal of her, and I hope she and Fergus have bigger roles going forward. I rather missed not having them at Fraser's Ridge last season.

I will be curious to see how Richard Rankin handles Roger's voice changes caused by the hanging.

On the whole, glad I reread it, and am looking forward to season 5!
