Interview with Matt B. Roberts on changes made in 307

Why Outlander Made that Huge Departure from the Books

Executive producer Matthew B. Roberts revealed that the change was born out of many debates in the Outlander writers room about how they could best "protect Jamie's character."

"Because we're watching it in a different medium, when you read about it Claire is taking you through it, it's easy to not delve into Jamie's inner thoughts," Roberts tells THR. "But when you visibly see Jamie on the screen, you have to play that something is bothering him, something he's holding in. When you do that enough, you have to give the audience a little bread crumb to know what this is."

I think Matthew does a good job. It can't be easy! I find his reasonings um, very reasonable. :)

that something is bothering him, something he's holding in

Yes and it was there in episode 306 as well. I thought so many complained over Jamie not being happy enough or something like that but I thought well, he's keeping all these feelings inside and his secrets of course he is hesitant and perhaps a bit distant which of course is seen much more in 307. He is not being Jamie because he is A. Malcom now, a smuggler with LOTS of secrets. He's trying to hold it all together. And how to tell Claire without losing her.

Which ties to the "shades of a lie" scene. I know he's lashing out at Claire but it's also like he's deperate to know/understand Claires feelings on different types of lies. He needs her to fogive him for the lie he's still not told. And when Jamie is upset, (aka feeling guilty at himself, he does get angry with the person he's talking to. Misdirection of the anger he's carrying inside)
